Q: Our agency has always requested a copy of the applicant's social security card for the paper file. We have an applicant who insists we do not need it and will only give us the number verbally (letting the interview see it to write down). She says it is illegal for us to require a copy for the file.

A: The participant is correct. Since the participant has allowed you to examine her Social Security card, she is not required to let you make a copy of it. SCSEP does not require documentation of the SSN; for your internal purposes, a case note should suffice.
